The ColorFlyer Books

Some wishes need a little color to get off the ground.

In the mountain village of Wren Hollow, the wind listens.

Fly a kite dyed the right color and your wish goes with it. Marigold yellow for courage. Walnut brown to bring something home. Madder red to mend a quarrel.

It won't come true as a miracle. It comes true as a nudge: a letter finally arrives, a stubborn neighbor softens, a lost dog turns for home.

But the last ColorFlyer left forty years ago, and the wind has been quiet ever since.

Hal Vane spent his life making color by the ton for the great city dyeworks. Now he's retired, widowed, and the owner of a crooked stone building he's never seen — which turns out to be the old kite shop, complete with a thieving crow and a dye journal missing its best pages.

He came to Wren Hollow to be left alone. The valley has other plans.
